Al-Ahzab

Qur'an 33:56

English

Indeed, Allah confers blessings upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [Allah to confer] blessings upon him and ask [Allah to grant him] peace.

Tafsir Summary

This verse is the foundation of Salawat. Imam al-Bukhari records that Ibn 'Abbas explained Allah's ṣalāh as His mercy, and the angels' ṣalāh as their supplication for the Prophet ﷺ. The command to the believers (‘ṣallū ʿalayhi’) is an obligation — scholars agree it is required at least once in a lifetime, and repeated in every Tashahhud of Salah. It ties the believer's tongue to the highest company: Allah, His angels, and the Prophet ﷺ.
